Password protecting files

For whatever reason or reasons, sometimes it becomes necessary to protect files from being seen or edited by unknown forces. Fortunately, WordPerfect makes this an easy feat to accomplish by assigning a password to the file.

After creating a new file, or re-saving a file that was previously saved without a password, the "save" and "save as" screens are where it starts. Notice a check box in the lower lefthand corner of the save screen where it says "Password protect," as in this image:

Click that box. Click save. This brings up the screen entitled "Password Protection."

Enter your password and retype it in the provided fields. Notice that the password appears as a series of asterisks (***). Click the radio button for "Enhanced Password Protection." Click okay. And, voila, your document is password protected.

Once the file is password protected, only those who know the password can open it.

I recently "upgraded to Word Perfect 12" Small Business Edition.

I can no longer password protect data files. After following WP tech support advice to UNINSTALL WP and reinstall, several hours later I was told Oops. WP12 can not password protect a .dat (merge data) file. NOW What? I need to protect a lot of sensitive data in the data files.

Next "UPGRADE" in WP 12 is the Indexer no longer works. After numerous Tech support(?) contacts they "Solved" my problem by saying "Oops" Indexing no longer works.

Any ideas? Time to bite the bullit and learn WORD?

Roger, I answered the first part of your question: "Password protect data files for merge documents."
