Metadata tips from lawyers

DiscoveryResources.org, a website geared for law offices dealing with issues involving electronic discovery, has an excellent article entitled, Mining the Value from Metadata.

The article, written by three lawyers in chat transcript form, is packed with tips for dealing with metadata in Microsoft Word. But, it does contain this advice for users of WP12:

(ES): After hunting around a bit, I found some similar tips for Word Perfect users. They're contained in a white paper published by Corel titled "Minimizing metadata in Word Perfect 12 documents." [PDF Link]. The steps are more complicated that the ones you've outlined for Word. (Link title edited to fit on this page.)

The article ends with this word for the wise:

(TM): I was just going to say -- often, it's the assistant or paralegal who is e-filing the document, or forwarding it on to opposing counsel. If they don't have the same basic education about the dangers of metadata, then it may not matter what the lawyer does to protect the document.

As a legal secretary who worked mostly for solo practitioners who don't want to be bothered with keeping up on such matters, I'd like some tips on how to impress upon them the importance of the lawyer getting educated about tech issues. Before it's too late.
