File loss prevention - Save early and save often
From the Department of Lessons Learned the Hard Way.
The first thing I do when creating a new document in WordPerfect, or any word processor for that matter, is give it a file name and save it. That is, as soon as I start the new document, I hit "CTRL S" and name it. I never wait until I'm done typing the document to name and save the document.
Throughout the typing of that document, I often hit "CTRL S." Eventually, I don't even realize I'm doing it. It just becomes second nature.
Before I run spell check, or execute a macro, or send it to the printer, or perform any action, for that matter, I hit "CTRL S." If I have to leave the desk, or answer the phone, or work in another program, or even work with another document, I hit "CTRL S."
"Save early and save often" is a good habit to get into. This harkens back to a time when computers were less stable and likely to freeze at any time. Needless to say, after this happened a couple times, I never let it happen again.
There are more file loss prevention strategies which I'll discuss in future articles. But, for now, this is the easiest and quickest.
