Just turn off curly quote marks

One complaint I hear (er, read) more and more, is how, when someone composes an e-mail in their word processor, then pastes it into e-mail, the quote marks get sent as question marks. This can sometimes happen when pasting into a web page, too. And, quote marks can be problematic when editing the same document in different word processors. I'm sure this causes problems in more places, but that's all I can think of right now.

I think I've found a simple solution to this problem. That is, switch from curly quote marks, or "smartquotes," to standard, straight up and down quote marks.

To accomplish this in WordPerfect, in the main tool bar, navigate to Tools > QuickCorrect > SmartQuotes. Here are the settings I use:

Click OK, and you're good to go.

Is there a reason to use fancy quote marks? Other than they're pretty? I have yet to find a boss who demanded curly quotes. As a matter of fact, I have yet to find a boss who, even if he knew the difference, ever mentioned the style of quote marks I use.

There are more characters that cause similar problems in e-mail and web pages, but I wanted to get this super simple solution out of the way first.
