Redacting metadata

Law.com has an article by renowned legal blogger, Howard Bashman, entitled, Redact This: Preserving Secrets on Appeal in the Digital Age. Among other things, he gives a few examples where people who wished to remain anonymous unknowingly revealed their identity. There's at least one case where a lawyer revealed the identity of his anonymous client. The article concludes with:

Yet when it comes to electronic filings made in a federal appellate court, the process for ensuring that secrets remain hidden is quite straightforward: Redact with care and then double–check to see that the appellate court has not posted online a version of an electronic filing containing information that should be kept confidential. Otherwise, what once had been your client's court–authorized secret may be available online for the whole world to see.
