The tickler file: From clunky to slick
I remember the first day of my first law office job like it was only yesterday. Just as I was trying to figure out how I could have "erased" a hole in the paper I was typing on, the lawyer informed me, "you'll be in charge of the tickler file."
Ah. Good. What is it?
By way of explanation, he handed me a wooden recipe box with a few white index cards flopping around inside. Even at my young, inexperienced age, it quickly became apparent that his tickler system needed a major overhaul. And, over the next four years, I worked constantly to improve the tickler file.
By the time I left there, the tickler file looked nothing like the pathetic thing that had been handed me on that first day. Instead, it was a tightly packed, fine tuned, and highly effective tickler system. In fact, we had tabbed dividers for years, months, dates, and colored index cards for tasks. Woo.
Of course, these days, we've all stopped erasing holes in paper. And, we all know what a tickler file is and how to make it work. But, while it is entirely imaginable that some old timers are still using the recipe box system, it must be said, we've come a long way since those days, baby.
Case in point:
MyTicklerFile looks to be a very promising online tickler solution for modern law offices, and anyone else needing to keep track, and be reminded, of dates. Unlike other online calendaring systems, MyTicklerFile will appeal to lawyers, if for no other reason, because of the name.
I'm signing up for the free account, and will be giving it a test spin. I'll give my thoughts on it a little later.
