Poor Washington Post review of WPOX3
Over the weekend, the Washington Post ran a review of WordPerfect Office X3 by Rob Pegoraro. To get the gist of his thoughts on the matter, just read the title of the article, WordPerfect's Unlucky 13th Edition Is Full of Pitfalls (warning: website uses annoying pop-up or pop-under ads). Ouch! Mr. Pegoraro has very little positive to say about WPOX3.
Accomplished WordPerfect users will more than likely find much to disagree with in the review. And, probably, some will agree. Unfortunately, I think Corel is marketing its new version at new users rather than accomplished users.
Further unfortunately, I still haven't had a chance to try out the new program, myself. So, I can't really say much about his points. But, I would hope that people won't be so turned off by WPX3 because of the review that they'll go running into the arms of Microsoft.
I'm of a mind that WordPerfect works and works well. No matter what version. If something in the program trips you up, reveal codes will easily let you figure out the problem and fix it. Whereas, with Microsoft Word, you're pretty much stuck with doing what it wants you to do the way it wants you to do it.
On Monday of this week, he appeared in a live question and answer chat (transcript) to defend his review, and other things.
Well, one thing I'll give him, he did a good job of distinguishing between the WordPerfect program and the other offerings that come with the suite.
It was a lengthy chat about many different topics. The WP questions were relentless.
As someone who has hosted online chats before, I'll say that these are not the best format, like a one-on-one interview would be. The person giving the answers comes off sounding cold, when in fact, they're really not.
However, I did detect more than just a little contempt for Mr. Pegoraro's review from a couple of the participants.
Edit: I took the liberty of excerpting the relevant portions of the chat (link).
