Recommended: Brother MFC-8440 Laser Multifunction

brother_MFC-8440_laser_multifunction.jpg Amazon.com has the Brother MFC-8440 Laser Multifunction on sale for $360.99. That's a savings of 44% off the suggested retail price. In addition, Brother is offering a $50.00 rebate (PDF) if purchased by April 1, 2006. And, free shipping and no sales tax for most makes this is a fantastic bargain.

I'm totally sold on Brother products as a solution for small business and home office printing needs. I've used this multifunction and had no trouble at all with it.

Product features:

  • Parallel and USB interfaces; PC and Mac compatible
  • Prints, copies, scans, and faxes
  • Up to 21 ppm print speed; up to 2,400 x 600 dpi print resolution
  • Up to 21 cpm copy speed; reduce/enlarge 25% to 400%
  • Fax forward/paging, up to 390 broadcast locations

And, of course, it comes with the drum unit and a regular yield toner cartridge. Also, if I recall correctly, it comes with both USB and parallel cables. Or, maybe I just don't remember buying a cable since I probably had one laying around.

Replacement toner cartridges will run about $55.00 and put out approximately 3,500 pages. The high yield toner cartridge costs about $70.00 and puts out approximately 6,700 pages. The high yield is definitely the better bargain.

In addition, it comes with ScanSoft PaperPort for Windows, and Presto! PageManager for Mac.

As I recall, while PaperPort supports saving documents in many formats, including PDF, it does not support WordPerfect format. However, that is easily overcome by saving as an RTF (Rich Text Format) and opening and resaving with WordPerfect.

As with most Brother printer products, they're quick and easy to install, use, maintain, and ready to go with little or no reading of the user manual. Not having to read the user manual is always a plus in my book.
