Where to store backup data

Apparently, there's a bigger problem with lost backup tapes than I imagined. According to TechDirt: Data Tapes Lost? Don't Worry About It, some experts are advising not to worry about it because no one will be able to access the data.

Personally, I don't think that's a very good business mindset. For one thing, if the tapes are gone, it doesn't mean they've been lost. It could mean they've been stolen.

Where to physically put the backups

At one place I worked, the backups were in the form of VHS tapes. There was no rhyme or reason for storing the tapes. Some were in desk drawers, and some were simply tossed on a shelf in a closet. Some were even in a cabinet under the computer. I was forever finding them scattered about the place.

Another place, it was just the opposite. The daily backups were put in a locked box which was stored in a fireproof vault on a different floor. It was a ritual for the person who did the backups. That firm was very security conscious.
