Well hello, ajaxWrite

Another week, another Web 2.0 application. Seriously. Found via Om Malik's Blog (Meet Ajax Write), ajaxWrite is a web based word processor from the mind of Michael Robertson. He was the one who brought us mp3.com so many years ago.

At first glance, ajaxWrite has one major difference from other online word processors. It does not require any type of registration to use it. That is a very big deal. And, highly unusual as web services go.

So, I went to ajaxWrite, opened a WordPerfect document from my hard drive with no trouble at all. The line spacing looked a little funny in places. But, other than that, everything looked exactly as would be expected in a word processor other than WordPerfect.

I then created a short letter in ajaxWrite, but was unable to save it. I doubt this is due to any fault in the system. Rather, it's more like system overload due to the fact that ajaxWrite was rolled out just yesterday and everybody and their brother are giving it a whirl. Presumably, documents would be saved to your computer's hard drive and not the ajaxWrite system, since there is no registration, and thus, no other way to retrive your documents.

On ajaxLaunch.com, Robertson writes:

Bye Bye Microsoft Word, Hello ajaxWrite: What if there was alternative for Microsoft Word that would install and open in 6 seconds, read and write Microsoft Word .doc files and run on Macintosh, Microsoft Windows or Linux computers? And oh yeah, it was FREE so consumers didn't have to pay $499 for Microsoft Office. I'm excited to announce that day is here.

In addition, Robertson plans to roll out a new Ajax application every Wednesday at noon PST.

Note: Apparently, ajaxWrite only works in the Firefox browser on Windows and not Internet Explorer.
