Inserting path and file name in your document

To insert the path and file name in your document, it is first necessary to save your document, thus giving it a path and file name. Then, on the main file menu, click Insert > Other > Path and Filename.

The most common place to put the path and file name is at the end of the document. (Although, it could be placed anywhere in the document.) This can be done at the end of the document proper, or in a footer.

I'm not exactly sure why people do this, but I sure do see it a lot. Especially on documents generated by other law offices. I suppose the most common reason would be in case the document needs to be edited when the creator is absent, some one else could step in and quickly locate it on the hard drive.

Personally, I've never done it. And, the reasons I don't, are:

  1. I've almost always worked in a situation where I'm the only one who edits my documents. That is, nothing can't wait until I come back from an absence. At least, that's what's happened so far. Such is the life of working in a one girl office.
  2. My documents are organized on the hard drive in such a way, that if the need arises, anyone could quickly and easily locate any document at any time.
  3. I don't really want to advertise to the world how my documents are named. Not to mention, why would I want opposing counsel's office seeing what's in the path. I mean, there could be sensitive information there.

When a document comes across my desk showing the path and file name, I almost always scrutinize it to see what might be revealed. Is that bad?

Large offices, and big teams. Those are two big reasons for doing it. Or say you have a file which is re-used year to year, and you need to access it. But the person who made it may be gone. I can probably come up with more reasons, but they'd probably be variations on the same theme. :)

Good points I never thought of, Krupo. The last time I worked in a large office on a team, we actually used Sharpies to write the document information on the mag cards. Love those mag cards. Hehe.
