Corel versus Google?

Can Corel even dream about taking on Google? Yes, and the Globe and Mail is on it:

Corel Corp. got clobbered several years ago when it tried to beat Microsoft Corp. in the PC software market. Today, after being revamped top to bottom and recently relisted as a public company, Corel faces an equally formidable competitor: Google Inc.

I never had it in my mind that Google would be considered a competitor of Corel. Yes, Google has acquired Writely, the online word processing application. But there is no way Writely could ever come closing to Corel's Wordperfect. But, that's not what this is about. Let's see what's going on here.

... Corel will launch [Wed., Sept. 6, 2006], new software for managing digital photos and video. It will give away one version of Snapfire, which lets users organize, edit and share their images, and sell a premium version called Snapfire Plus for $40 (U.S.) with more advanced editing features.

Maybe. I don't know. I'm not optimistic. If Corel really wants to take on Google, it might consider offering scaled down online free versions of some it's software. That would be something.

Snapfire is so new it bleeds... its old site into the google search for it. The cached copy of snapfire.com says "This is the placeholder for domain snapfire.com. If you see this page after uploading site content you probably have not replaced the index.html file. ..."

Amusing.

The Globe article is interesting - I downloaded it to see how the program will perform. I just finished the download and I'm already concerned: its feature list for the basic edition lacks features that Picasa has - I would have to upgrade to the "plus" edition and pay money to catch up to all of Picasa's features. Still, I'm one to try a new thing, so I'll give it a shot and see how it works. :)

Welcome back to blogging. :)
